Dear Sr. Christa Petra
Verbovets, Dez. 2014
Warm greetings from our SSpS Sisters in Ukraine.
Expressing to you our great appreciation for your kind financial support to the ministry to children, I would like to share with you the experience of this service to the children and young people we work with.
Since our sisters came to Ukraine they have been working with the children and young people. It was a great need in our parishes. Although, this service have had some changes throughout the years we still see a deep sense to serve in this mission for children as the future for our Church and country. In every community some sisters prepare children and young people for the Sacraments, have various meetings to help the children and young people to meet God in their lives. The young people, as animators, very often help us to realize our program with the children, especially during summer holidays. They give their time and share their talents with us and especially with the children. Together with the catechetical plan during the year, we also try to teach children in creative ways, the openness and solidarity with people from other countries.
In every place we work, we try to organize for children various trips, recollections and pilgrimages to holy places. It is possible mostly during summer holiday, but during the year we try to organize the recollections and seminars for women, and retreat for the girls and for the young people to discern their vocation.
Recollections during summer we name “Summer Holidays with God”. We travel with children to various places, searching suitable place for our recollections’ needs. Many our groups used to come to Verbovets where our sisters throughout three months organize summer holidays for children from different places of Ukraine. In case you have not heard about Verbovets already, I would like to share a little about this apostolate.
Verbovets is a beautiful place in every season of the year, surrounded with hills and woods. Most time of the year it is a quiet place and excellently suits for the individual prayer and meditation. Although, when the summer time comes Verbovets turns into a very joyful and loud, filled with the children’s voices place.
At the beginning recollections in Verbovets were organized in a spontaneous spirit. When the various restrictions did not reach us yet and prevent to receive a big number of children – there were from 60 to 80 children during the only one term (from 7 – 15 days). Nowadays we can accept only 40 children for one term. Nearby our community house and the Parish Church there are two bungalows prepared to receive 20 children each one.
Recollections are organized for different children. There are girls and boys from Catholic families, there are from Orthodox families, and there are number of children for who the Church is a strange place and where they can step in first time in their lives.
We try to organize the time in such a way that there will be a time for prayer, Holly Mass, time for catechesis that has various and creative forms, a time for relax and recreation.
Organizing Summer holidays we are very much depended and we are very gracious to our benefactors. I have to admit that children are not able to pay all the expenses we spend on recollections. Many children who come to Verbovets give their contribution, but there are parents who are not able to give even a small part.
Here I would like to express our gratitude You help us to make possible this beautiful apostolate with children not only in Verbovets, but also in other our places where we work with children and young people in pastoral ministry.
May God bless you and embrace you with His love and care.
With love and prayer,
Sr. Ludmila Pechenyuk, SSpS
